Before the First Road
The Hands Behind the Page
Every saga has names written on the page. But some names stand behind the page. They are the hands at the shoulder, the voices that say keep going, and the eyes that see the work before the world has learned how to look at it.
The Saga of Black Wings exists because imagination endured for decades, but it reached the open world because love, belief, patience, pressure, humour and faith refused to let it stay hidden forever.
These dedications are for the people who helped turn a lifetime of private story into wings.
My Beautiful Mrs · My Ness
For Vanessa
For Vanessa, my beautiful Mrs, my Ness, the woman whose love became hearth, harbour, courage and road beneath my feet.
You believed in me when the books were still a private storm. You listened when the world of Black Wings was too big to explain in a simple sentence. You gave me patience, kindness, laughter, faith and the kind of love that makes a man braver than he was before.
You did not merely encourage the saga. You helped make it possible. Your belief stood beside the work before readers, publishers, search engines, websites or polished pages knew it existed. You saw the heart of it. You saw me.
If Black Wings has warmth, it is because love taught it where the fire was. If it has tenderness, it is because I have known yours. If it has a home at its centre, then your name is written in the foundation.
To Vanessa, my Ness, my beautiful Mrs: my love, my courage, my soft place in a hard world. The wings opened because you believed they could.
My Sister · My Real-World Witness
For Stephanie
For my sister Stephanie, who pushed, prodded, believed, encouraged and would not let the books remain only a secret thing carried quietly in the dark.
Some people support a dream politely. Stephanie did more than that. She nudged it. Challenged it. Stood near it. Reminded me that stories are not meant to live forever in silence when they have spent a lifetime gathering breath.
Her belief mattered. Her voice mattered. Her stubborn faith in the work helped move the saga from private pages toward the world outside.
Black Wings is full of names that survive because someone refused to let them be forgotten. This dedication is for one of the real voices who refused to let this story stay hidden.
To Stephanie: my sister, my prodder, my believer, my real-world witness. Some roads open because someone loves you enough to keep pointing at the gate.
My Daughter · My Heart
For Maisie
For my daughter Maisie, whose belief, love and presence are woven into the heart of why these books finally stepped into the light.
A father may carry stories for years, but it changes a thing when his child believes those stories deserve to be seen. Maisie’s encouragement mattered more than she may ever know. Her faith gave weight to the idea that Black Wings was not only something I had made, but something worth sharing.
The saga is full of children who matter, not as symbols, not as proof, but as living hearts with names, voices, humour, courage and futures of their own. That truth has roots in real love.
To have my daughter believe in me is one of the great honours behind this work. It is a quiet magic no system could count and no page could fully hold.
To Maisie: my daughter, my heart, my reason to be braver. Thank you for believing the wings were worth opening.
Brave Little Light · Remembered Always
For Kian
For Kian, Lucy’s nephew, a brave little boy who fought cancer with courage far beyond what any child should ever have to carry.
Kian’s life mattered. His name matters. His memory matters. Though he passed from this world, he has not passed out of love, out of remembrance or out of the hearts of those who carry him.
In The Saga of Black Wings, Kian’s memory lives on. Not as a shadow, but as a light. Not as absence, but as presence. The saga remembers him in its own language: flame, bell, courage, witness, tenderness and the truth that love does not stop at the edge of death.
Some names become part of the world because they were imagined. Others become part of it because they were loved. Kian is the second kind. The truer kind.
For Kian: brave little light, remembered always. In Black Wings, your name still rings.
For All Four
The Wings Did Not Open Alone
To Vanessa, Stephanie, Maisie and Kian: this saga carries my name on the cover, but it does not stand on my name alone.
It stands on love. It stands on belief. It stands on the people who pushed me when I hesitated, lifted me when I doubted, laughed with me when the road was strange and reminded me that a lifetime of story deserved more than a closed door.
I wrote the books, but I did not reach this point alone. The wings opened because you believed there was sky beyond the room.
With all my love, gratitude and honour: this road is yours too.
The Memory Kept Beside the Road
Love Is Part of the Archive
Black Wings remembers through hearth, name, feather, flame, song, stubborn encouragement and the people who stayed near the work before anyone else knew its roads.
These dedications are not an appendix to the saga. They are part of the reason the saga found the courage to become public.
Belief can become a road beneath someone’s feet.
A remembered name remains part of the living world.
Love may carry a story without owning it.
Gratitude belongs where the work can see it.
